About our Company
BIOCYTOGEN is a Nevada biotech firm that designs and develops extremely highly sensitive novel cytokine reporter mice. These mice are used by academic research labs for basic research and by pharmaceutical companies for high-throughput screening of small pharmaceutical compounds. These compounds will be developed into safe and effective new drugs for autoimmune disease treatments.
Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response of the body against its own cells or tissues. Autoimmune diseases cover a wide range of disorders, including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, type I diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, thyroid disease, Grave¡¯s disease, and so on. Although it is not clear what factors cause autoimmune diseases, some believe that bacteria, virus infection, or drugs may trigger autoimmune diseases.
The National Institute of Health estimates that up to 23.5 million Americans suffer from an autoimmune disease and that number is rising. In comparison, cancer affects up to nine million and heart disease up to 22 million Americans. Researchers have identified 80-100 separate autoimmune diseases and suspect at least 40 more. These diseases are chronic and can be life-threatening. Commonly used immunosuppressant treatments can lead to devastating long-term side effects.
The last few years have brought hope and relief to autoimmune disease patients as new recombinant proteins have entered the marketplace to treat rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis. However, recombinant protein drugs have a wide range of disadvantages such as the necessity of multiple injections or infusions. Protein drugs have an elaborate production process substantially increasing their costs. Small pharmaceutical compound drugs are being researched and developed to overcome the disadvantages of recombinant proteins in treating autoimmune diseases. Small organic compound drugs can be manufactured by simple chemical synthesis, greatly decreasing the cost to manufacture.
Mouse models, considered the best tools for screening small chemical compounds, have not been used for high-throughput drug screening of small pharmaceutical compounds due to their unavailability. Immune response is a very complicated process that can not be mimicked in cell line technology and also has a low probability of success. Gene-modified mice suitable for high throughput screening have been greatly needed. Using our technology, blockers can be found at any step during the screening process greatly increasing the possibility of finding new drugs and greatly reducing the cost of developing autoimmune disease treatments.
